Felicitations from GLISS. The academic, moral and discipline success stories of the school have been told on many platforms particularly during the climax of the 10th Anniversary Celebrations of the school. Previous editions of this booklet have also vividly highlighted the mission, vision, objectives and achievements of the school. The school has worked and is continuing to work hard to achieve these organizational benchmarks.

GLISS has seen improvement in classroom availability, students’ and staff strength for the last three years leading to significant growth and development.

Improvements include the following:

Introduction of Graphic Design and Elective ICT programme into the Senior High school curriculum
Strengthening the evening Arabic and Islamic studies school to Diploma level.
School bus for students
Counseling children in crisis
Coloured photocopier machine
Upgrading school website www.gliss.edu.gh

Poor sanitation and general instability in the school’s outer environment as well as poor accessibility to the school by road, all due to the activities of notorious squatters, have been some of the major hurdles faced by GLISS. Yet another issue of major concern is the periodic flooding of the school and the accompanying life- threatening situations and economic loss.

Fortunately, however, clearance of the squatters by Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the securing of the campus frontage by school authorities has drastically improved the security, sanitation and access challenges to the satisfaction of parents/guardians and all stakeholders of the school.
The only problem that seems to defy solution is the periodic floods. It will require full attention from all stakeholders.

Please read through the following encouraging developments which have been my personal driving force to remain committed to the growth and development of the school for 15 years now. The future is certainly bright.

Achievements

The fact that GLISS is a rising star among the best Second Cycle Schools in Ghana is given credence to by the school’s continuous improvement in the WASSCE reaching its zenith in June 2013.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) jointly prepared an academic league table showing the performance of about 716 senior high schools nation-wide, in the May/June 2013 WASSCE. On that table, GLISS placed 1st in the Greater Accra Region and 10th in the country. GLISS has not looked back academically ever since.

These landmark achievement is attributed to factors including:

Financial support for gifted but needy students by GISER and some benevolent members of the GISER

Awards and Recognitions

Facilitated at 100% Ashesi University scholarship to an exceptionally gifted female student from a financially needy family in 2012
In 2014, recommended and aided a member of GLISS teaching staff who was awarded a 100% sponsorship for a 6 weeks training programme in the United States fully funded by the United States of America Government.
Imagining Tomorrow 2016: H2O Challenge Announces Winning Teams

The Imagining Tomorrow H20 challenge, an initiative of the Global STEM Alliance of the New York Academy of Sciences and partners Sisters Cities International and Sqore, announced two winning student teams, one from the U.S. and one from Ghana. The challenge was developed to encourage students ages 13-17 from around the world to create innovative science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)-focused solutions to critical water-related needs that exist in their communities.
